Chapter 5 Part 1 - Revised

Skye was standing in a green field, a meadow of flowers as far as the eye could see. A line of trees blanketed the outer edges and straight ahead was a vast openness with a figure in the distance…a man?

She picked up one foot in an effort to move forward and it felt slow and heavy while the fragrance of the wildflowers was so thick and so strong she could taste it in the back of her mouth. The figure ahead was calling her, saying… something. She couldn’t hear what was being said and tried to move faster. “I can’t hear you!”  She called out but her voice came out muffled and slow.

He kept speaking, his arms up waving at her over his head. Trying to get her attention

“Is he smiling?” she thought, but he was still what seemed like miles away.

“I’m coming!” she yelled with disorientation surrounding her and tried to force her feet to run but they felt so very heavy and it took a lot effort to lift them. His form seemed to fill out some more as she got closer and he continued to speak to her even though she couldn’t hear any sound coming from him and yet it seemed important for her to get to him. Off in the distance she could hear wolves howling, their voices deep and melodic and in between their long howls she could hear and feel the air pressure shift reminding her of a rhythmic and steady beat of wings.

All around her she could hear these sounds but not the man; she could still not hear his voice.

Skye’s pace would not pick up and she knew she wasn’t going fast enough. She continued to push herself forward by her sheer force of curiosity and the sense of familiarity; the harder she pushed herself the more her motions began to speed up. She struggled at first, and then time clicked shifting into motion until it moved past normal, speeding up more and more until she was running full speed ahead and she moved towards him. She felt like she was flying not feeling a thing as her feet hit the soft grass and the flowers whipped at her legs. With a last push, she stretched her arms out towards him. She was almost touching him, she was so close but his face was blurred. Every step got her closer and his face cleared, she could see him now and knew exactly who he was.

Her heart almost beat out of her chest.

It was the man she loved more than anything, more than her life itself. Everything he was standing before her told her it was him, it was Deacon… and he did not look happy. Fear and anger lines his face, he looked scared and she still couldn’t hear any sound from him. She was almost there, her feet flying over the grass and right before she touched him, wanting so badly to put her arms around him never to let go, she looked into his face and saw how terrified he looked…her blood went cold and then…he disappeared. Skye could stop the momentum carrying her forward and ran right through where he had been standing. She stumbled as she tried to turn around tripping over her feet in the process but stayed standing. Her heart stopped and her fear gripped her completely while turned around in frantic circles. “Deacon!!” she screamed breathlessly, “Deacon! Where are you?”

Skye started to panic and the wolves howled louder. Their voices seemed closer to her now but she didn’t care. Tears were streaming down her face and she tried to blink them away. There was no winning that one so put her hands over her eyes and cried. Great sobs coming from her, her voice echoing over the empty space. The wings continued to beat in the distance and she never heard the wolves’ paws through the grass coming towards her before and then it all went silent. When she dropped her hands and opened her eyes… Cyrus was standing in front of her his voice as loud as an air horn.

   “Mom… Wake up!”
